Pre-Writing Assignment Three: The “Lens” Reading
This brief assignment involves your writing a 250-300 word paragraph on William
Shakespeare’s Richard the Third through your understanding of Sharon
D. Michalove’s essay “The Reinvention of Richard III.”
Preparatory Reading:
Read Kerry Walk’s “How to Write a Comparative Analysis” to
get an understanding of what the “lens” mode of reading is.
Instructions:
1. Read Sharon D. Michalove’s essay “The Reinvention of Richard
III.”
2. Isolate some ideas that you find relevant and interesting in Michalove’s
essay, in terms of how they would affect your understanding and appreciation
of Shakespeare’s Richard the Third.
3. Choose ONE of the ideas you have isolated and use it as a “lens” to
read / interpret a passage from Richard the Third.
4. Write a 250-300 word paragraph highlighting some of the results of your “lens” reading
of Richard the Third.
5. This assignment is due on 19 February 2004. Bring an extra copy of the paragraph
to class in case I call on you to share with your classmates what you have
written.
