Conferences

Conferences are held in my office, Blk Adm #05-24. Please bring to the conference a hard copy of your first draft, including a copy of the cover letter for in which you state your motive and thesis, and reflect on your draft and your plans for revision. You will need to hand this letter in after the conference.

You need not do any extra reading in preparation for our meeting (which will take the place of the first of this week's regular, scheduled class meetings). However, do come to the conference prepared. This means that you will need to be able to explain your paper to me in detail and to defend it; in particular, you will need to share with me your plans for revising the paper.

To give me a chance to work through your paper, upload a soft copy to the Conference Drafts folder of the IVLE Workbin by the date indicated in the Course Schedule--see Unit 1, Unit 2, or Unit 3, as relevant. The conference will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your draft with me and to clarify uncertainties you might have concerning how you will revise it. Please note that the conference is not a meeting in which I tell you about your paper, but in which you tell me about it.

Given that each conference is only 20 minutes long, you will need to be focused to make the most of this time. You should come prepared to discuss your argument, plans for revision, specific problems you may be having, as well as possible solutions. Our conversation will be based on your plans for revision. The point of this module, after all, is for you to learn to write well on your own.

Please note that you should collect the hard copy of your paper, with my comments on it, from outside my office before the conference; your paper will be available from the time advised in the relevant section of the course schedule. Please go through the paper before the conference and start thinking about how you could revise. Have a look here if you are unsure what the various symbols and abbreviations I use mean.

Remember that a missed conference is tantamount to an absence.

Remember also that the conference is in lieu of class.

As you need to offer a focused argument, I will require that you adhere to the assigned page length limit in the final draft. I will not accept papers over the assigned page limit.
