UWC2101G: Writing and Critical Thinking: Femininity: Of Mind, Body, Or Culture?

Instructor: Dr Chitra Sankaran

Unit 3: (four weeks duration)

This final unit will attempt to combine the work of the two preceding units. It will look at the whole notion of gender and attempt to examine the theoretical readings and the texts and attempt to come to an understanding of the complex notions surrounding the term. It will attempt a critique of these varying constructions using the theoretical perspectives that were introduced in the course of the module.

At the conclusion of the unit, students will be expected to write a term paper based on a case study of any text, fictional or factual from outside the course that offers an opening on the question of gender. In their term paper students must attempt a critique of the concepts in the text using feminist theoretical perspectives.

Rhetorical goals for Unit 3:

  • To cognize conflicting terminologies
  • To challenge binary thought systems or indeed to question any assumption that is perceived as given
  • To identify ideological traps embedded in arguments
  • To make theoretical claims that are demonstrably fact or text based
  • To use jargon appropriate to the field of discussion in order to display expertise
  • To usefully tie up your experiential data to your argument
