Paper 2 (4-6 pages) 30%
Paper 3 (6-9 pages) 35%
Informal writing/participation (10%): For each unit, you will engage in a number of pre-writing activities and exercises related to your longer essays.
Please note that each essay will require a first draft. Although these drafts are not graded, failure to include this draft along with your final paper will result in an "F" for that assignment. Late papers are accepted only at my discretion and may be subject to severe penalties in terms of grade reduction, unless you have made prior arrangements with me or in the case of an exceptional situation (death in the family, hospitalization, etc.). Conferences for each essay are mandatory; failure to attend your scheduled conference will jeopardize your chances of receiving a passing grade.
Since we meet only twice a week, and will be covering some challenging material at a rapid pace, class attendance is important. Three unexcused absences will result in your final grade being lowered by one letter. In the case of any absence, excused or otherwise, remember that it is your responsibility to make up any missed work and to keep up with the reading.
You may encounter ideas or beliefs that run counter to your own in the readings for this module (and indeed, throughout your participation in the Scholars Programme), or as expressed by fellow classmates in discussion. Being a responsible member of this class means engaging respectfully with all points of view, considering new perspectives and articulating your own opinions.
Paper Policies
All papers are due on the date noted. Please type your papers using a standard font and size (preferable 12 point), double-spaced and with one inch margins all around. Staple in the upper left hand corner. Also remember to include a title for every essay. The title should both inform and intrigue; center it immediately before you begin the body of the essay. Do not put the title in quotation marks, underline the title, use boldface, or all uppercase letters.
A cover page is not necessary. Instead, please use the following header style. In the upper left-hand corner of the first page, type as follows:
Your name
Module no., Section no.
