Sidewalks in The City of Tomorrow?
Read the following texts:
Jacobs, Jane. "The Uses of Sidewalks: Contact." The City
Cultures Reader. Ed. Malcolm Miles et al. London: Routledge,
2000. 16-17. (Course Packet). Originally published in 1969.
Jacobs, Jane. "The Uses of Sidewalks: Safety." The City
Reader, second edition. Ed. Richard T. LeGates and Frederic
Stout. London: Routledge, 1996. 106-111. (Course Packet).
Originally published in 1969.
Preparation:
As the editors of The City Reader note, Jane
Jacob's work is in part a reaction to "modern planning practice
in the Corbusian tradition ...with its insistence on skyscraper
blocks and skyscraper developments" (106).
These questions on Corbusier and Jacobs might help
you think through the issues raised by the readings. Pick
one and answer it in several paragraphs. Email me your paragraph
the morning of class.
