UWC2101D: Selves and Cities

Instructor: Dr. Jeff Webb

The City of Tomorrow

Read the following texts:

Le Corbusier. "The Pack Donkey's Way and Man's Way." The City of Tomorrow and Its Planning. New York: Dover, 1987. 5-13. Originally published in 1929.

Le Corbusier. "A Contemporary City." The City of Tomorrow and Its Planning. New York: Dover, 1987. 163-179.

Wayne Booth, The Craft of Research, "Qualifications" 132-148.

Preparation:

Le Corbusier's text is quite varied, including many photographs of existing cities and sketches of ideal cities (with captions). Think about these visual texts: What sorts of impressions of the city do they convey?

Writing Assignment: Pick an aspect of Corbusier's text that you think bears comparison with another text we've read in the class, and develop the comparison in several paragraphs. Please email me your paragraphs the morning of class.

Further Reading (please contact me if you find materials that should be added to this list):

  • FEED City Issue, "Street Level," 6.12.00. An interesting assessment of Le Corbusier's vision of the the city of tomorrow.
