Instructor: Dr. Julia Gardner

Required Texts

Diana Hacker, A Writer's Reference 4th Edition (available at the NUS Co-op)
The only other whole text you will need to buy is a copy of "The Tempest"--any inexpensive edition will do.
All other readings will be from a course reader.

Course Requirements

Paper 1 (3-5 pages) 25%
Paper 2 (5-8 pages) 30%
Paper 3 (8-10 pages) 35%
Oral presentation and in-class writing, activities 10%

Please note that each essay will require a first draft. Although these drafts are not graded, failure to include this draft along with your final paper will result in an "F" for that assignment. Late papers are not accepted, unless you have made prior arrangements with me, or in the case of an exceptional situation (death in the family, hospitalization, etc.).

Since we meet only twice a week, and will be covering some challenging material at a rapid pace, class attendance is important. Three unexcused absences will result in your final grade being lowered by one letter. In the case of any absence, excused or otherwise, remember that it is your responsibility to make up any missed work and to keep up with the reading.

All work turned in for this class is assumed to be the student's own, original work. Any student found plagiarizing (using someone else's ideas or words without acknowledgement) will receive an "F" for that assignment, and depending on the severity of the offense, possibly fail the course. We will learn how to properly document sources; if you are in doubt, please see me before you turn in your paper.

Paper Policies

All papers are due on the date noted. Please type your papers using a standard font and size (preferable 12 point), double spaced and with one inch margins all around. Staple in the upper left hand corner. Also remember to include a title for every essay. The title should both inform and intrigue; center it immediately before you begin the body of the essay. Do not put the title in quotes, use boldface, or all uppercase letters.

A cover page is not necessary. Instead, please use the following header style. In the upper left-hand corner of the first page, type as follows:

Your name
Module no., Section no., Course Title
