CCWP01: Inventing the Academy

Unit 1: What is education?

  • All students prepare questions about unclear aspects of Essay 1 assignment.
  • All students do Preparation for Seminar 1(2).

 

Seminar 1(2)

In-class

  • Critiques of chosen extracts
  • Generating a sharper thesis, evidence and conclusions

Homework

  • All students do Preparation for Seminar 1(3).
  • Group 1 students make copies of their openings to Essay 1 for every student and bring them to Seminar 1(3).

 

The tutor will organize the class into two groups.

Week 2 (10/1/00)

Seminar 1(3)

In-class

  • Critiques of Group 1 openings
  • Drafting and revising a first draft

Homework

  • All students do Preparation for Seminar 1(4).
  • Group 2 students make copies of their opening and development sections to Essay 1 for every student and bring them to Seminar 1(4).
 

Seminar 1(4)

In-class

  • Critiques of Group 2 opening and development sections
  • Exercise on editing content

Homework

  • All students build in arguments and closings into Essay 1.
  • All students do Preparation for Seminar 1(5).
  • Group 1 students send copies of Essay 1 to their assigned readers before Seminar 1(5).

 

  • The tutor will assign each Group 1 student two readers.
  • Writers and assigned readers work out a plan for the writers to send drafts to the readers so that readers have enough time to critique drafts.

Week 3 (17/1/00)

  • Writing Workshop for Group 1

Homework

  • All students do Preparation for Seminar 1(6).
  • Group 1 students begin revisions on Essay 1.
  • Group 2 students send copies of Essay 1 to their assigned readers before Seminar 1(6).

 

  • All students turn in two hard copies of Essay 1 plus two hard copies of the one-page letter described in the Essay 1 assignment sheet to the tutor.
  • The tutor will assign each Group 2 student two readers.
  • Writers and assigned readers work out a plan for the writers to send drafts to the readers so that readers have enough time to critique drafts.

Seminar 1(6)

In-class

  • Writing Workshop for Group 2

Homework

  • All students read Section C3 in A Writer's Reference, pages 17-23 on revising.
  • Group 2 students begin revisions on Essay 1.

 

 

 

Week 4 (24/1/00)

  • Conference for Group 1

Homework

  • Group 1 students complete revisions on Essay 1.
  • Group 1 students read and summarize Adler, "Education and the Pursuit of Happiness" and Postman "The Educationalist as Painkiller" for Seminar 2(1)
  • All students planning to use films for Essay 2 view prospective films.

 

Group 1 students turn in Essay 1 for grading in Seminar 2(1)

Seminar 1(8)

In-class

  • Conference for Group 2

Homework

  • Group 2 students complete revisions on Essay 1.

  • Generating a valid thesis with supporting evidence

  • All students draft an opening to Essay 2
  • Group 2 students make copies of their Essay 2 openings + unfinished development sections for every student and bring them to Seminar 2(3)

  • Group 1 students make copies their Essay 2 openings + unfinished development sections for every student and bring them to Seminar 2(4)

 

  • The tutor will assign each Group 1 student two readers.
  • Writers and assigned readers work out a plan for the writers to send drafts to the readers so that readers have enough time to critique drafts.

Seminar 2(4)

  • Critiques of Group 1 students' essays
  • Creating a clear organizational structure

Homework

  • All students produce a complete draft of Essay 2
 

Week 7 (14/2/00)

  • Revising sentence-level features

Homework

  • All students revise wording of drafts and identify one major problem that they would like to discuss in Seminar 2(6) in their peer groups

 

  • The tutor will organize the class into three peer revision groups for Seminar 2(6)
  • All students should view the video, Making Your Case, and do Worksheet for Making Your Case before Seminar 3(1). Do not wait to the last minute.

Seminar 2(6)

  • Peer group conferences

Homework

  • All students revise drafts based on Seminar 2(6) feedback
 
  • All students turn in two hard copies of Essay 2 plus two hard copies of the one-page letter described in the Essay 2 assignment sheet to the tutor.
