For Incoming Exchanges Students

Welcome to the University Scholars Programme (USP).

This webpage contains information that will be useful to incoming exchange students who wish to read module(s) offered by USP.

About the University Scholars Programme

The University Scholars Programme is designed to develop the intellectual, leadership, and personal potential of promising students enrolled at the University.

Modules in USP are designed to reflect the interconnectivity of disciplines, to provide a platform to try out new ideas, as well as to act as a test bed of experimental learning taught by specially selected staff with qualifications from top universities in the world.

USP is very much student-focused. Classes are small and discussion-based, with modules designed to ensure maximum student participation. Students thus enjoy close interactions with their course mates and teachers.

We warmly welcome international exchange students to participate in our classes and in an array of interdisciplinary activities and seminars, thus enabling them to network with some of the best students in Singapore and around the region, and make friends from all over the world.

We invite you to read About Us to learn more about USP.

About the Scholars Programme Modules

USP offers modules in thirteen areas of study, which encourages students to synthesize and integrate knowledge from diverse disciplines, so as to arrive at a rich and multi-faceted understanding of the inter-connectedness of human knowledge. Students are exposed to three main Domains and the thirteen Areas of studies in the Writing & Critical Thinking, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Sciences and Technologies baskets at the First-Tier level. The teaching of these modules emphasizes the modes of inquiry in these various disciplines.

Exchange students are welcome to apply for any of the modules under these thirteen areas of study, subject to acceptance by the University Scholars Programme. We encourage you to take modules outside your normal area of specialization, in order to follow our ethos of expanding disciplinary horizons.

Eligibility to read Scholars Programme Modules

Exchange students who have registered themselves with the NUS Registrar's Office (at University Hall, Administration Building) within the registration period specified in their Offer of Admission letter will be eligible to apply for Scholars Programme module(s), subject to approval by USP.

Module(s) offered in the First-Tier curriculum; these modules are more intensive and challenging than most introductory modules and may be equivalent to 2nd or 3rd year modules in many universities. Note also that modules are often offered on a rotational basis; as such, exchange students are advised to check the webpage for the current modules offered in that semester.

Exchange students must be proficient in both spoken and written English to benefit from their studies in the Scholars Programme, as the medium of instruction is in English, and all modules involve active classroom discussion and written assignments.

Application to read USP Modules

Required Document : Non-Graduating (NG) Student Application Form – Decision Sheet

As exchange students are unable to register on-line, you should approach the Student's Office of the University Scholars Programme (located at Blk ADM, 6th Floor) to submit the abovementioned applications forms for review by the Scholars Programme.

The application forms must be submitted to the Office by the end of the normal module registration period for NUS students. In the event that a preferred module choice cannot be offered, allocation will be based on their next preferred choice. After the review, exchange students will be notified via email to collect the outcome of the application. They should then submit a copy of this to the NUS Registrar's Office for the module to be added to their record.

Note that it is the exchange student's responsibility to keep the NUS Registrar's Office informed of the module(s) that have been approved.
