UQR2310 : Singapore Studies: Transportation Planning in Singapore

Introduction

This module teaches the practice of transportation planning, using the Singapore transportation system as a case study.

Students learn to appreciate the interaction between transportation and national development; generate generic and specific solutions to local transportation problems; and evaluate the performance of transportation schemes.

Topics covered are: Development of transportation in Singapore, transportation system planning and evaluation of transportation schemes.

Objectives

The objectives are to:

  1. Enable students to understand the interaction between transportation and national development,
  2. Develop students’ basic knowledge and skills on a transportation system planning,
  3. Provide students with a inter-disciplinary platform to appreciate the complexities and constraints in transportation planning, and
  4. Challenge students to generate innovative transportation solutions with an appropriate evaluation framework to assess their feasibility.

At the end of the course, students should be able to

  1. Appreciate the nature of transportation problems and the inter-relationships between transportation and development
  2. Propose, formulate and present feasible solution schemes to transportation problems
  3. Engage in meaningful and informed discussions on transportation issues in the Singapore context.
