USLA07: Memory and Modernity: American and Singaporean Literature in Context

Instructor: Dr Jeff Webb

Discussion Group

The discussion forum will give you the opportunity to explore ideas prior to class. You are responsible for one substantial posting (by which I mean several developed paragraphs) per week. Each week I will either ask questions about the reading (to which you can respond) or will otherwise give you direction. My hope is that through articulating your ideas here--and reading the ideas of your classmates--your understanding of the course texts will be enhanced.

The key in writing about literature is to pay attention to the details. Often we have a general sense of what a passage or a work might be saying; these postings will give you a chance to substantiate, and render specific, that general sense. So strive to use evidence from the text--quotations plot details etc.--as you make your points. I'm interested in your engagement with the material more than the polish of your prose, but do try to write precisely and coherently.

Directions:

  1. Go to http://ivle.nus.edu.sg/
  2. Locate the course by clicking on "Course info: Search" in the left column and following the prompts.
  3. The screen for Memory and Modernity should come up. Click on "Discussion Forum" of the right.
  4. In the left column of the Discussion Forum is a list of topics I've created--for instance, "Week One--Questions." Click on the topic for the relevant week to read the writing assignment. Click on "reply" at the top to post your assignment. Do not change the title.
  5. You are of course welcome to post your own questions and thoughts independently of the assignment. Simply click "post" at the top and title it appropriately.
