Essay Mechanics
The following pages were written for
courses I teach at the Open University, Singapore Institute of Management, Singapore.
While the examples are taken from student work written in response to assignments set at
OU, the general principles apply to most literature essays. Note that in Open University
teaching the acronym TMA stands for “Tutor Marked Assignment,” and is here
synonymous with “essay”:
