Dispense-A-Dream ’07 (YEP to India)

Date: 10 Dec - 28 Dec 2007
Location: Tumkur District, Karnataka, South India

Dispense-A-Dream ’07 is an overseas community exchange aimed at creating a meaningful and experiential learning opportunity. It hopes to raise awareness and appreciation of foreign cultures, provide students with a greater understanding of socio-economic development issues pertinent to public health and education, while nurturing in them a sense of community, civil participation, as well as their responsibilities as future healthcare professionals.

Participants of Dispense-A-Dream ’07 will engage in a process of group learning and reflective evaluation to better make sense of their experiences. Through group discussions and facilitation sessions, the team will be encouraged to share their thoughts and to help one another in their discussions and reflections on the lessons that they have derived from (i) their involvement in the project, and (ii) the host community.

Volunteering activities:
(1) Refurbishing the High School
(2) English lessons for teachers and students
(3) Health Camp for High School and Primary School
(4) Health Assessment Checks (BMI, body fat index, BP)

Facilitation sessions will adopt a two-pronged approach:

  1. Team building: The abilities of effective communication and cooperation with others in a team environment and the building of relationships of trust and confidence within the team are necessary goals by which the greater common goal can be achieved. Through close interaction and team building activities, we hope to develop stronger communications, interpersonal and leadership skills in our participants.
  2. Reflection: Through the process of reflection, participants are encouraged to assess what they have learnt and what they have rendered; i.e. service & learning.
