USP-Piper Introductory Creative Writing Workshop

In collaboration with the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing, Arizona State University, the NUS University Scholars Programme is proud to bring to you the 2nd USP-Piper Introductory Creative Writing Workshop. The details are as follows:

Date: 6 June – 14 July 2007 (six weeks), two 2-hour meetings per week,
Time: Wednesdays (7-9pm) and Saturdays (10 am—12 pm).

The programme will be conducted in interdisciplinary workshop format.

Students will be introduced to the techniques of writing poetry and fiction. The first half of this interdisciplinary workshop will concentrate on poetry, focusing on the use of concrete language, sensory detail, image, form, voice and character. In the second half of the course, students will examine the techniques of fiction, including but not limited to: narrative arc, character, story, voice, point of view and structure. Students will complete various exercises and critiques of each other’s work in a workshop atmosphere as well as journal as they learn to be comfortable with and manipulate their own personal material. Readings will be assigned and discussed in class. By the end of the workshop, students will have completed three poems and one story and will include these in a final revised portfolio of their work. More details are provided in the appendix.
