Dear members of the USP community

Our very own Destination Danang 2006 YEP team (which did a community service project in Vietnam in December 2006) is proud to present a talk by Ms Le Ly Hayslip, the founder of Global Village Foundation. Ms Le Ly is the author of two books, "When Heaven and Earth Changed Places" and "Child of War, Woman of Peace." Her books subsequently provided the basis for the Oliver Stone movie, "Heaven and Earth."

Details of this talk are as follows:

Speaker: Ms Le Ly Hayslip, Founder of East Meets West Foundation and Global Village Foundation
Date: March 9, 2007, Friday
Time: 5pm to 6:30pm
Venue: USP Conference Room, Block ADM, Level 6

Ms Le Ly Hayslip's peaceful Vietnamese life was torn apart during the Vietnam War. During the war, her village was burnt down forcing her to move into the city where she found a job as a nursing assistant at an American hospital. In 1969, she met Ed Munro, an American engineer working in Vietnam, whom she married   and later moved to America with.

14 March, 2008in a Chinese Restaurant and later, with the help of her former boss, started her very own Hollylinh Restaurant in 1985. That was also about the same time when she completed her first book: 'When Heaven and Earth Changed Places'. This is the same book that inspired Oliver Stone to direct the film: 'Heaven and Earth', which was released in 1993.

More importantly, Ms Le Ly's determination to rebuild her homeland drove her to start the East Meets West Foundation. Bringing together people across America with similar calling, the foundation has since helped built more than 60 elementary schools in Vietnam.

Today, Ms Le Ly heads the Global Village Foundation, the NGO that made Destination Danang possible. This Friday, 9th of March, we are all very honoured to have Ms Le Ly coming down to NUS to share her thoughts and views on the latest developments in rural Vietnam.
