Asia Institute for Political Economy
The “5th Asia Institute for Political Economy” (AIPE) was held in Hong Kong from 13 July to 4 August 2007. The Institute is sponsored by The Fund for American Studies (TFAS - based in Washington DC), in partnership with the University of Hong Kong and Georgetown University.
It takes in only 60 participants from a wide range of nationalities per year. The National University of Singapore (NUS) was represented for the very first time this year through Gao Ting, a first year Faculty of Science + USP student. (To read more about Goa Ting’s experience whilst at AIPE, please click on the Student’s Reflection link at the bottom of this page).
The objective of the Institute is to allow outstanding advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students from Asia and the United States to “analyze and debate issues of economics, global trade and economics development with future leaders throughout Asia and the United States, well-known professors and notable guest lecturers.” The Institute’s interdisciplinary curriculum comprises a Political Economy component as well as an American Studies component.
The stellar cast of past guest speakers includes:
15 July, 2009ecretary, Hong Kong SAR government
- Mr Ronnie Chan, Chairman, Better Hong Kong Foundation and the Hang Lung Development Group
- Mr Daniel Fung, former Solicitor General, HKSAR government
- Mrs Regina Ip, former Secretary for Security, HKSAR government
- Ms Christina Loh, Founder, Citizen’s Party and former member, HK Legislative Council
- Mr Andrew LT Sheng, former Chairman, Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission
The cost of the program, which included tuition, meals, housing (at HKU dorms), reading materials and special events, was USD 3500. However, scholarship of USD 3000 is guaranteed for those selected. Thus, selected participants had to pay at most USD 500, excluding airfare and other local expenses. There was also no transfer of credit from Georgetown to NUS.
The Fund for American Studies also runs the Live.Learn.Intern summer program in Washington DC. Those who have participated in the Institute will have priority for the Live.Learn.Intern program in the following summer, if they are interested.
Further details of the Institute (as well as the Live.Learn.Intern program) can be found at http://www.tfasinternational.org.
